Educational Surgical Mission - mongolia
NOF arrived in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in 2023 after learning that it did not have any pediatric neurosurgical treatments available for its young population at the country’s only children’s hospital. Most of its neurosurgical treatments were treated at the adult hospital whose experience and resources towards pediatric care were very limited.
The National Center for Maternal and Child Health (NCMCH) is the country’s sole hospital for children that serves a population of 3.4 million. A country with a rugged terrain that make access to a healthcare facility, literally, a journey for some families. NOF learned that mothers and fathers at times resorted to seeking treatment outside of Mongolia, especially for the treatment of Cerebral Palsy.
Since 2023, NOF has been working with the only pediatric neurosurgeon at NCMCH that involves hands-on training during a biannual ESM, virtual lectures and mentoring. In 2025, the Ministry of Health declared pediatric neurosurgery a priority and have partnered with NCMCH to ensure that the country’s pediatric neurosurgery program is set up. NOF was tasked to help build their pediatric neurosurgery program with NCMCH under an 8 step plan.
This site is the first ESM that is exclusively pediatric. The challenge of building a pediatric neurosurgical program from scratch is an exciting opportunity for NOF, albeit, a tremendous honor to influence the standard of neurosurgical care for the children of Mongolia.
To date, NCMCH has benefitted from NOF’s equipment program with its most recent OR microscope donation. NOF is also working with KidsOR of Great Britain to help build a neurosurgical OR at NCMCH.
