Helping CHILDREN AND ADULTS Get Adequate Surgical Care
Advancing neurosurgical care in underserved communities worldwide through service, education, and support.
Promoting Accessible Neurosurgical Care
Many people around the world suffer from diseases of the brain and spine and are unable to access adequate and safe medical care. The Neurosurgery Outreach Foundation is an all-volunteer non-profit organization in Jacksonville, Florida, USA, that aims to make treatments more accessible using a sustainable, collaborative, education-based approach. We reach out to disadvantaged communities so no one is deprived of the neurosurgical care they need.
We aim to improve access to neurosurgical care for the following conditions:
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Spinal Cord Injury
- Spina Bifida
- Encephaloceles
- Hydrocephalus
- Brain Tumor
- Epilepsy
- Brain Aneurysm
- Stroke
- Brain Hemorrhage
Inadequate Access to Neurosurgical Care
Around the world, there are:
- 22 Traumatic Brain and Spine Injury Cases per Minute
- 10 Stroke and Blood Vessel Abnormality Cases per Minute
- 2.4 Infections of Brain and Spine Cases per Minute
- 2 Hydrocephalus Cases per Minute
Neurosurgical diseases cause serious disability and death. Lack of access to neurosurgical treatments is the most significant barrier to alleviating the burden of diseases of the brain.
This lack of or limited access to care is due to multiple reasons, including:
- Poor Healthcare Infrastructure
- Lack of Trained Neurosurgeons
- Inability to Pay for Care
- Lack of Education or Training
Some parts of Asia and Africa may have more than 5,000,000 people for every neurosurgeon. This means there are not enough neurosurgeons to treat all patients.
Mission
- Our mission is to promote the advancement of neurosurgical care and treatment in underserved communities worldwide through service, education, and support. > Educational Surgical Mission (ESM) is comprehensive, collaborative, sustainable, and education-based where exchange of ideas thrive, patient-care is focused and our volunteers treat alongside host neurosurgeons using applicable techniques to help build capacity beneficial to the local community. > Dr. Benigno S. Aldana, Jr. Educational Fund disburses several awards annually to deserving neurosurgical residents/trainees to help them complete their training. > Equipment and Patient Care Support Programs are gifts of re-purposed or newly acquired equipment, instruments, supplies, and funds to benefit disadvantaged patients to have access to neurosurgical treatment.
